Power Up… READ! this summer at the Public Library

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - It’s time to “power up” your reading skills and earn prizes for participating in the 40th annual Summer Reading Program at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. This year’s theme, Power Up…Read!, offers all sorts of excitement by spotlighting “superheroes.”

To kick off a fun season of reading (June 1-July 31), ALL Library locations around Hamilton County are holding Summer Reading activities related to this exciting theme on Saturday, June 1. Children and their families are invited to stop by their neighborhood Library to decorate a superhero mask (while supplies last).

Special kickoff events at selected Library locations on June 1:

Day of activities in Hyde Park Square to benefit Pink Ribbon Girls

Third Annual “Shop the Park Pink” is occurring on Thursday May 23rd in Hyde Park. The funds go to Pink Ribbon Girls, an organization whose mission is to support young women throughout all phases of breast cancer.

It begins at 10:00 a.m. at Lululemon where participants will be decorating their strollers or themselves followed by a mile walk and strength exercises led by Stroller Strong. All day participating Hyde Park Square Businesses will donate a portion of sales to Pink Ribbon Girls.

Starting at 5:00 p.m. at Hyde Park Square there will be face painting, live music, raffle with over 100 items, balloons, wellness programs and more!

Coldwell Banker Rick and Holly Finn are sponsoring the event.

Food, games and prizes at Kilgour Elementary carnival

MOUNT LOOKOUT, OH (FOX19) - Kilgour Elementary in Mount Lookout will once again host a day of food, games and prizes on Saturday, May 18.

The Kilgour Carnival includes over 40 games and rides, a grill/concessions stand for lunch, a DJ, face painting, basket raffle, cash raffle, and bake sale.

The Carnival is also a fundraiser for the Kilgour PTA. The money raised goes to support many before and after school clubs, field trips, assemblies, the teachers’ fund and many other extras.

All carnival activities take place on school grounds from 11am - 5pm.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - From nature preserves and parkways, to regional and neighborhood parks, Cincinnati has a long and proud history of enhancing the quality of life through outdoor recreation. In keeping with this tradition, Cincinnati Parks, in partnership with ArtWorks and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, is gathering community input on the design of a new carousel to be built at Smale Riverfront Park.

Through May 30, the Main Library is displaying selections from its historic postcard collection in A Place of Beauty, Health and Play: A History of Cincinnati Parks. This display features more than 60 images of 17 parks, including Ault, Eden, Lincoln, Mount Echo and Washington parks.   Images from the display can be viewed at http://cinlib.org/YIsCAq.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Public Library and Gold Star Chili want to reward you for participating in Summer Reading! Stop by a participating library branch location to visit the Gold Star Chilimobile, register for Summer Reading, and get a free cheese coney!

Saturn-day Saturday at the Cincinnati Observatory

Saturn-day Saturday at the Cincinnati Observatory

MOUNT LOOKOUT, OH (FOX19) - Saturn takes center stage at the Cincinnati Observatory on Saturday, May 18 from 9pm - 11pm for Saturn-day. 

There will be viewing of Saturn through the historic 1845 and 1904 telescopes (weather permitting), running talks, and tours of the buildings.  If clear, portable telescopes will be set up outside to show visitors the Moon and stars as well.   

Reservations are not required to participate in Saturn-day. The cost for admission is $7 dollars per person and drop-ins are welcome.

Public Library holds Fine Amnesty Day May 15

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - On May 8 the Public Library received a National Medal for Library Service from the Institute for Museum and Library Service. This award is the nation’s highest honor recognizing museums and libraries for their service to the community.

To celebrate this national recognition and thank our community for their support, we're holding a Fine Amnesty Day on Wednesday, May 15. During Fine Amnesty Day, outstanding fines will be removed from library cards. The fines may be the result of items returned prior to or on May 15.
