Gateway to Recognize Outstanding Students at May 14 Awards Convocation

COVINGTON, KY — Gateway Community and Technical College will recognize the exemplary academic, leadership and technical performance of 188 students, including 106 scholarship recipients, Tuesday at its annual Night of Excellence. The convocation will take place at 7 p.m. at Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills, Ky.

Rani Clark and David Strange, both of Ft. Thomas, received top honors as recipients of the J.D. Patton Award for academic and technical excellence. The Phi Theta Kappa academic honorary earned the award for best student organization of the year.

Recipients are selected by faculty and staff committees and academic divisions based on student performance. Individual students receiving awards, include:

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson to Speak at Gateway Commencement May 15

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) — Kentucky Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson will be the commencement speaker May 15 at Gateway Community and Technical College’s 12th annual graduation ceremony, according to Dr. Ed Hughes, college president and CEO.

“We are delighted that the lieutenant governor could join us for this milestone event in our students’ lives,” Dr. Hughes said. “We believe Lt. Gov. Abramson’s example of achievement and community service will be inspiring to our graduates.”

The class of 2013 numbers 845 graduates who have earned a total of 1,464 credentials. The credential count exceeds the number of graduates because students may earn more than one credential.  The credential breakdown includes 362 associate degrees, 93 technical diplomas and 1,009 certificates.

Gateway April 30 Expo Connects Parents with Employers

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) — Students and parents attending the Advanced Manufacturing Expo at Gateway Community and Technical College April 30 can learn firsthand from local manufacturers about the bright job outlook for manufacturing careers.

Six local employers are scheduled to attend the education expo at Gateway’s Boone Campus in Florence April 30. They include DHL, Mubea, Mazak, Ellison Group, the Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics, and Virtual Manufacturing Services.

The expo is open to the public and begins at 5 p.m. Participants can tour Gateway’s high-tech Integrated Manufacturing Center, Computerized Manufacturing and Machining Lab, and Welding Lab between 5 and 6 p.m., and meet with local employers between 6 and 7 p.m. Gateway will conduct an information session on college credit that can be earned in high school from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Apprenticeship information will be shared from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

Call for authors, illustrators to participate in the seventh annual Books by the Banks

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The 7th annual Books by the Banks: Cincinnati USA Book Festival will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) at the Duke Energy Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati. 

Books by the Banks is one of the Tristate region’s most popular literary events attracting book lovers of all ages who come together for a day of “celebrating the joy and  reading of books.”

For those authors and book illustrators interested in participating, the Books by the Banks 2013 author selection team is currently accepting submissions via their website at www.booksbythebanks.org.

Hasan Davis Highlights Gateway Super Sunday Recruiting Fair Feb. 24

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19) – Hasan Davis, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice and a performer/youth advocate, will be featured at the third annual Super Sunday recruiting fair hosted by Gateway Community and Technical College Feb. 24.

Davis, who is also a motivational speaker, will reenact the experience of York, a slave who accompanied William Clark and Meriwether Lewis on their historic expedition to explore the American West.

Super Sunday is a free event that will occur Sunday, Feb. 24, beginning at 1 p.m. at Gateway’s Urban Center at 525 Scott Blvd. Covington. The event is open to the public and is co-hosted by the Ninth Street Baptist Church of Covington.

“Super Sunday has become an annual opportunity for Gateway to reinforce to all students that a quality education is the best preparation for a good job,” said Gateway President and CEO Ed Hughes.
